Position - - Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project |
| Overall
Introduction |
The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project
is the only control project that provides a large storage
capacity below Sanmenxia on the mainstream of the Yellow River.
While enabling adequate flood control, it retains sediment
by making use of the sediment storage, enabling water/sediment
regulation and mitigating sedimentation on the downstream
riverbed.
With sophisticated technologies, high degree of difficulties
in construction, complicated relations of management in the
field, and challenges in resettlement, the Project is considered
as one of the most challenging schemes in the history of hydraulic
engineering in the world.
The milestones of construction include: start of preparatory
works in September 1991, commencement of main works in September
1994, achievement of river closure in October 1997, power
generation connected to provincial grid of the first unit
in January 2000, and total completion of main works in late
2001, with a schedule of 11 years. The work quantities include:
94.78 million m3 earth/rock excavation and backfill, 3.48
million m3 concrete, 30,000 t metal works, and 200,000 resettlers.
The Project, which is completed ahead of schedule with cost
saving and excellent quality, is appraised by the World Bank
as an example of cooperation with the advancing countries.
